How often do you stretch?
How much do you stretch?
Does this seem like a weird question?
When someone asked me this question it did not seem like such a weird question since it was asked at an interview where the whole idea was for me to share the way I train for the open water events I participate in and part of this training consists precisely in maintaining flexibility on my arms and shoulders, and to achieve it, it is important to stretch, before and after each swimming training.
My answer was focused on describing the exercises I do to stretch to maintain my shoulders flexible, immediately the guy who was interviewing me said… Have you ever over stretched?… I kept thinking and answered the following:
During all the kilometers I have swam in my life I have tried to maintain my swim efficiently and have trained to prevent injuries to my joins and ligaments, however,… I have over stretched several times!
What does over stretching means? It means I have looked for the way to stretch as far as I can to get outside my comfort zone… I think if we do not over stretch to get pass the comfort zone we get stuck. So many people prefer not to over stretch and not to leave the comfort zone, and the only thing they get is frustration, apathy, and disappointment, this makes a lot of people drop out from their goals. When you over stretch, you push your own limits, get rid of the bumps and limitations you were wearing and little by little you leave the comfort zone that produces mediocrity behind. Pushing limits and extending them a little more each time becomes our motivation to demand more from ourselves every day, over stretching implies hard work and effort but also, generates trust.
Can you get hurt by over stretching? Physically it is possible that if you stretch more than necessary you can get a sprain that usually gets well with anti-inflammatories and some rest, but in life, over stretching makes me a better person and if this takes me to over stretch my effort, I think it is worth it.
Over stretching means… swimming one more kilometer, extend my main series and make a couple of extra repetitions, look for colder water to adapt my body, perform my gym flexibility and strength routine even when I feel tired, follow my coaches’ instructions, train with the best attitude and enthusiasm and above all, get out of such comfort zone each day of my life to give my best, this is my 101% to my family and beloved ones…
I hope to be able to over stretch the limits to my love every day of my life.
